SPAN works with various stakeholders within the city and private sector on a number of projects that together help to enhance the quality of life within the SouthPark area and connect neighborhoods to the commercial core. Specific areas of focus include:
- Communication and Education
- Provide members with information regarding on-going projects, rezoning applications and planning related topics relevant to the SouthPark area.
- Coordinate seminars, meetings and educational opportunities for neighborhood organizations and volunteers on a variety of planning, development and neighborhood building topics.
- Comprehensive Neighborhood Improvement Program (CNIP)
- Work with members to identify city funded projects that can be funded through CNIP bonds or general revenue.
- Advocate on behalf of members for additional projects or funding that will strengthen the commercial district, better connect SouthPark neighborhoods or complete identified projects in a timely fashion.
- Work with the city to design and implement key projects such as the SouthPark Loop and Backlot Trail, Barclay Downs sidewalks and improvements to Symphony Park.
- Zoning and Planning
- Work with city staff and elected officials to identify changes to the 2000 Small Area Plan that will better protect neighborhoods and support continued investment within the SouthPark area.
- Participate in on-going meetings regarding proposed changes to the City’s zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan as it relates to SouthPark neighborhoods.
- Work with city staff to identify changes to the current zoning ordinance that would better regulate infill redevelopment and construction as it relates to issues such as noise, traffic, tree save and exterior lighting so as to minimize the impact of new development on SouthPark residents.
- Rezoning Petitions
- The Rezoning Committee works with the city staff to ensure that residents are notified about upcoming rezoning activity and works with members to review, comment or recommend changes to proposed site plans as needed.
- The Rezoning Committee meets on as needed basis to review and comment on development activity within SouthPark area and identify opportunities to implement key projects that will improve pedestrian connections and accessibility.
- Advocate on behalf of members at City Council public hearings.
